MT. SHASTA, Calif. — Body camera footage shows an officer-involved shooting of a man attacking an Amtrak worker, KRCR reported.

The Dec. 25 incident occurred when an Amtrak train’s crew called police to report a passenger’s erratic behavior, according to an earlier report. The passenger has since been identified as Nicholas Detweiler.

Body camera video released on Feb. 21 shows responding Mt. Shasta Police Department Officer Jeremiah Capurro boarding the train and approaching Detweiler, who appeared to be sleeping or pretending to sleep. Capurro instructed Detweiler to stand up from his seat, put his hands up and turn around.

Detweiler stood up but continued trying to reach into a plastic bag after Capurro instructed him to raise his hands. Detweiler argued incoherently with Capurro and resisted, hitting Capurro when he tried to detain him.

Capurro then deployed his TASER twice, which did not appear to have any effect on Detweiler, who put both hands on the TASER before moving away from Capurro. Capurro used a club to hit Detweiler in the arm. Detweiler removed a set of brass knuckles from his jacket and put them on his hand.

Capurro then drew his service weapon and radioed that he was holding a suspect at gunpoint.

Detweiler turned around and moved to punch an Amtrak worker who was trying to restrain him. Capurro then fired several shots at Detweiler. Detweiler then grabbed the Amtrak worker and began to choke him, leading Capurro to fire more shots.

Detweiler did not stop attacking the Amtrak worker until he was subdued by the gunshots. He died from his wounds. The Amtrak worker was also inadvertently shot and wounded during the incident and is expected to survive.
