NEW YORK — Last week, New Yorkers had a chance to get up close and personal with the NYPD’s first electric patrol car. The agency unveiled its tricked-out Ford Mustang Mach-E at the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan.

NYPD Insp. Scott Olexa of the Fleet Services Division introduced the car in a special video.

“We have over 100 of these vehicles coming in and we are going to be putting them into service of patrol vehicles,” Olexa said in the video. “The idea is to move to a greener fleet.”

The police version of the Mach-E comes with ballistic doors and windows, a steel roof and standard police lighting, Olexa said. The vehicle is pursuit-rated and can reach 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Olexa says charging stations are now being installed at multiple NYPD facilities.

New York City bought 184 of the electric cars in December for the NYPD and other emergency response agencies. An earlier report said the vehicles would arrive by June 30, although it’s not clear when the Mach-E will officially hit the beat.

The New York International Auto Show has been held in Manhattan annually since 1900 as an “annual exhibition of automobile” pageantry, according to the show’s website.
