LONG BEACH, Calif. — Authorities in Southern California say a police detective and three suspects were shot and wounded after detectives witnessed a drive-by shooting and gave chase.

Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt says the detectives were working on an unrelated case in Compton shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday when they saw the shooting and chased the three suspects, who fired and hit the detectives’ car.

The chase led to Interstate 710 and officers and suspects traded gunfire after they exited in Long Beach about 20 minutes later.

One detective was hit and taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Pratt says one suspect was in critical condition, another was in surgery and the third was described only as stable.
