COLUMBUS, Ohio — A manhunt continues this morning for a suspect believed to have shot a Zanesville police officer and a police dog.
Officer Michael Schiele, 29, was attempting to serve a misdemeanor warrant about 8:15 p.m. Sunday on a suspect when the man shot the officer and his dog, Zanesville police said.
Schiele was shot once in the left leg. He was treated at Grant Medical Center in Columbus and released about 4 a.m.
The dog, Bosco, was critically wounded, and Columbus police said it was taken by helicopter to Ohio State University for treatment.
“We look at the canines as one of our own,” said Zanesville Cpt. Mike Baker said.
He said Schiele told him after the incident, “Bosco saved my life.”
Baker said the dog is being treated this morning at OSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Police believe Bosco was shot twice, in the neck and chest.
Police have not publicly named the suspect, who officials have said should be considered armed and dangerous. Central Ohio police were told to be on the lookout for the suspect just after 10 p.m., saying he was last seen leaving the scene of the shooting on foot.
Baker said the suspect has relatives throughout Ohio.
