TENAFLY, N.J. — A New Jersey police department recently released dashcam footage of a former Port Authority official swearing and berating officers during a traffic stop.
The Tenafly Police Department released the video Tuesday of Caren Turner, a former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey commissioner, berating officers during a traffic stop on March 31, the Associated Press reports. Turner, who also served as the agency’s ethics chair, attempted to pull rank on the officers involved in the traffic stop.
The officers initially stopped the vehicle because of tinted windows and a partially obscured license plate, according to NJ.com. After the driver couldn’t produce the car’s registration or insurance card, police issued a series of summons for “unclear plates,” the insurance card and driving an unregistered vehicle.
Turner was called to the traffic stop by her daughter, who was a passenger in the car, after one of the officers ordered the car to be impounded when he determined its Nevada registration was expired. A police report said Turner flashed her Port Authority badge and demanded to know why the car was stopped.
Turner, who’s also a former aide for Hillary Clinton, became increasingly agitated throughout the encounter as officers declined to giver her details on the summons that were issued. When one officer tried to end the discussion, she can be heard on video saying: “You may not tell me when to take my child. You may shut the f--- up!”
Turner was never charged with any wrongdoing, according to the police report. Turner resigned from her post last week and issued an apology Wednesday.
Turner apologized for the language she used and letting her emotions get the best of her, but she denies that she used her position to seek special treatment.
