SAN ANTONIO — The Alamo Colleges Police Department has identified the officer who suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to a shooting Tuesday night as Sgt. Lionel Martinez, a 21-year veteran of the department.

Martinez was on his way to a shooting near 1400 Main Avenue just after 10 p.m., when he suffered the heart attack. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died an hour later.

“The Alamo Colleges Police Department and the entire Alamo Colleges Family mourns the loss of our Sgt. Martinez and extends our deepest condolences to his family and brothers and sisters in blue,” ACD posted Thursday on Twitter.

The shooting Martinez was responding to ended up with one man hospitalized in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his chest.
