HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A Texas deputy constable injured after being struck by a DWI driver in January has died from an infection that may be a direct result of the accident.

The Houston Chronicle reports 52-year-old Deputy Constable Jeffrey Wooten died Wednesday at a hospital from a severe infection that another constable claims was a consequence of his traffic accident months ago.

On January 23, Wooten was driving home from his second job when he fell ill and pulled over his vehicle. He was struck by 26-year-old Joseph Lee Fiedor, who was driving while intoxicated.

Wooten became a quadriplegic as a result of the collision.

Fiedor was charged with intoxicated assault in the incident and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in August.

Wooten was living in a nursing home at the time he was transported to the hospital. He is survived by two brothers – both of which are deputies.
