EDINBURG, Texas — The family of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who was shot in the head while responding to a crash last month issued a statement Sunday updating the community about his condition.
Trooper Moises Sanchez remained at the neurology intensive care unit at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Sunday night, but is listed in stable condition and his health is improving, his wife Yvonne Sanchez said via a statement released by DPS Spokesman Johnny Hernandez.
“His vitals remain strong,” she wrote. “We are pleased to see a little improvement every day with movement in his face and body.”
The trooper was shot a month ago on April 6 in Edinburg, sparking a massive manhunt for the man accused of shooting him, Victor Alejandro Godinez, 24 of Edinburg.
Godinez was apprehended hours after the shooting and was arraigned on three counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer, a first degree felony punishable by up to life in prison.
A judge issued Godinez a $3 million bond and he remained at the Hidalgo County jail Sunday night.
The trooper, on the other hand, is beginning to keep his eyes open for a longer period of time and his family expects him to begin rehabilitation soon.
“We have a long journey ahead, but we have unshakeable faith and trust that God will be at our side every step of the way,” his wife wrote.
Yvonne Sanchez also took the opportunity to thank the community for the continued support during this difficult time.
“The children and I are humbled and extremely grateful for the outpouring of support for Moses and every member of our family,” she wrote. “The people of the Rio Grande Valley have shown just how incredibly special they are as we have witnessed this community band together to support us, Texas DPS and the entire law enforcement community.”
The family also thanked neurologists, nurses and staff at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for “providing exceptional care for Moses.”
“You truly are extraordinary human beings, and we feel very blessed that Moses is under your care,” Yvonne Sanchez wrote.
