YORK, Pa. — A car chase along Route 30 and into York City ended with a York City man punching a state trooper in the face and then being tased, according to charging documents.
Joseph Michael Ramos, 20, of 652 W. College Ave., has been charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, driving with a suspended license and other related charges.
The charging documents state that at about 11 p.m. Feb. 4, troopers saw Ramos’ car accelerate to a high rate of speed on Route 30 in Hellam Township, so they began to follow. They saw him driving quickly and weaving in and out of traffic, so they turned on their lights and sirens in an attempt to pull him over near the Mount Zion Road exit, police said.
But Ramos floored it, fleeing “in a careless manner” through traffic, committing “numerous traffic violations,” the documents say.
He eventually turned off Route 30, ending up on Pennsylvania Avenue near Vogelsong Drive before troopers cut him off, the documents state.
Ramos and his three passengers got out of the car and attempted to make a getaway on foot, but they didn’t go far before troopers caught up with them, according to the documents. At that point, Ramos turned around and punched the closest trooper in the face, police allege.
The two then struggled briefly before another trooper caught up to them and helped get Ramos on the ground, where he continued to fight them, documents state. At that point, one of the troopers used his stun gun on Ramos, according to documents.
Ramos then stopped fighting, the documents state.
Troopers found 15 bags of heroin, a bag of crack-cocaine and a small amount of marijuana, according to documents. Ramos was carrying $1,080 in cash, police allege.
One of the passengers, Brandon Mikel Washington, of 327 W. Philadelphia St., was also charged with criminal conspiracy and possession of a small amount of heroin with the intent to distribute. He’s in York County prison on $3,000 bail, according to prison records.
Ramos remains in the prison on $60,000 bail, according to records.
