Buying space with your spotlight

During traffic contacts on multi-lane avenues or highways, I often aim my spotlight down on the ground to create a circle of light on the asphalt just beside my front fender. Passing motorists, who normally give no second thought to driving within inches of a police car with blue lights on, always seem to drive around the spot of light on the ground, giving me an additional few feet of clearance.

I only do this when I don’t need to illuminate the suspect vehicle, or when I am the second unit on the scene.
