We are trained to keep our gun hand free while we are on duty. Whether we are on a traffic stop, investigating a domestic dispute, or approaching a house on a police run, we have been trained to keep our gun hand empty and ready in the event that we need to draw our weapon. I am a firm believer that regardless of where you may live and how “safe” you may think your neighborhood is, that Murphy’s Law will always rear its ugly head and Sh&t will happen. When off duty, practice the same habit of keeping your gun hand free. Pumping gas, taking the family to see a movie, or strolling through a park with a loved one should all be treated with the same heightened awareness that you would have on duty. Remember, off duty you look like any other prospective victim to a bad guy, so please keep that gun hand free and be alert to your surroundings. Get the drop on him before he knows what happened.
