JEANNETTE, Pa. — A Jeannette man is accused of kicking a city police sergeant in the chest and cursing at the police chief after allegedly refusing to cooperate during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

Nelson Edward Mayer II, 23, of 203 Laura Court, also tried to escape custody while receiving treatment for a possible drug overdose at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital at Jeannette, city police allege.

Mayer was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, escape and possession of a controlled or counterfeit substance after allegedly failing to stop at the intersection of Baughman and Adams avenues at 1:13 p.m. Thursday.

In a criminal complaint, police allege Mayer kicked Sgt. Keith Rosky in the chest with both feet after he complained that he needed to go to the hospital because he overdosed on oxycodone, which is used for pain relief.

Mayer jumped from a stretcher, ran through a nurse’s station and attempted to leave the hospital by opening a window, the complaint states.

Mayer told police Chief Jeff Stahl that he ingested the pain pills because he did not want police to catch him with them after the traffic stop.

Earlier, when Stahl gave Mayer a copy of his traffic citation at the scene of the alleged violation, Mayer allegedly cursed at him and called him a “pig,” according to the complaint.

Stahl then arrested Mayer for disorderly conduct, patted him down and found seven other pills in his pockets.

Mayer also allegedly kicked at a window in Stahl’s police cruiser, causing it to come off track.

Jeannette District Judge Joseph DeMarchis set bond at $50,000 and scheduled a preliminary hearing for June 11.

Mayer is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison.
