A shotgun, a patrol rifle, and a wallet were stolen from Taos Police Chief Rick Anglada’s police car early Christmas morning, according to a department spokesman.
There were no signs of forced entry on the unit, said Taos Police Lt. David Maggio. Anglada “thinks he might have left it unlocked,” Maggio said, because Anglada had gone to get something from the vehicle earlier in the evening, or the car may have been unlocked by the robber.
The theft occurred Saturday morning between midnight and 6 a.m., Maggio said.
The police unit was parked outside Anglada’s Taos home, Maggio said.
The weapons could not have been seen from outside the vehicle because of the tinting on the windows, Maggio said.
He also said Anglada’s unit is not equipped with a locked gun rack, though some police vehicles do have such a device.
The guns were an AR-15 and a short-barreled shotgun, Maggio said, which were likely loaded at the time of the theft. There was “nothing major” in the wallet, he said.
An investigation is under way, he said.
