Grand Canyon National Park Ranger Malerie Mento doesn’t just patrol from the top of the Grand Canyon — her beat takes her deep into the heart of this National Park for days at a time. Based at Havasupai Gardens, she serves as a law enforcement officer, wildland firefighter, advanced EMT, and search and rescue lead. After wrapping a four-day shift below the rim, she hiked 3,000 feet up the Bright Angel Trail. With millions of annual visitors and extreme terrain, NPS rangers stand ready for anything from heat illness and falls to complex rescue operations.

Rangers may assist with evacuations by mule or helicopter, educate visitors on safe hiking practices, and serve as incident commanders in medical or environmental emergencies. Nationally, NPS law enforcement rangers patrol over 400 sites across the U.S., protecting millions of visitors each year while preserving America’s natural and cultural heritage.
