4 Guards Win $300,000 Each in Jail Suit

by Iver Peterson, The New York Times

TRENTON - A federal jury in Camden awarded $300,000 today to each of four Atlantic County corrections officers who contended that their warden violated their civil rights by punishing them for union activity.

The four, all officers of the Fraternal Order of Police lodge representing jailers at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, had organized picketing to protest what they said was overcrowding and understaffing at the jail.

The officers, Edward Clopp, Norris Justis, Robert R. Murie and Iris Quezergue, sued Atlantic County and the warden, Frank Mazzone, contending that he had them videotaped and photographed during the picketing. They also said they were persecuted for complaining about prison conditions to the news media.
