A Big Year for Minneapolis Police Payouts

KARE-TV News (Minneapolis)

It was a big year for Minneapolis police payouts.

The city has already paid more to settle claims than in any 12-month reporting period since 1998.

Since December 2003, the city has paid $1.6 million to resolve seven cases. The amounts have ranged from $5,000 to a $995,000 settlement reached June 18th.

That money was paid to a man who said he was beaten by police.

The city attorney’s office calls this year’s settlements an aberration, but the record pace of payments has some council members concerned.

Police Chief William McManus says the recent settlements underscore the need to evaluate the current officer training program.
