Most men at age 72 would be content with taking a trip down to the local VFW downing a few cheap beers, listening to long forgotten tales of bravery/stupidity, or both and even joining in and telling a few. Not SgtMaj BILLY WAUGH, U S Army GREEN BERET Retired.
Billy fought for the opportunity, and was selected to be in Afghanistan, on a cold, cold day in Dec 2001 during the first days of Operation Enduring Freedom, as the GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR was just beginning. Billy had been fighting America’s enemies across the globe for nearly Fifty-Years and he felt the only place for him, as this new War started was on the Battlefield. In Afghanistan.
Billy’s career started in the 1948 as he signed up for the U S Army. He would eventually get selected for Special Forces, and make it through the grueling training. One of the original Green Beret’s, Billy found himself in Vietnam for a tour of duty that spanned 7 and ½ years. He was awarded numerous Purple Hearts, 1 Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars. Among countless other awards and decorations, commendations, etc. After Vietnam, and his decision to retire from Army life, Billy found himself delivering mail. He surely was not content at this mundane job and soon he was back in the thick of things in Libya. Excerpt from Billy’s book – “ From Korea to Afghanistan and every conflict in between, I have fought whomever my country ordered me to fight. For fifty years in sixty-four countries, I have sought and destroyed my countries enemies – whether they be called Communists or Terrorists – wherever they hide.”
While attending the TREXPO-East in Chantilly, I met with SgtMaj Billy Waugh and briefly spoke with him, exchanged information, and for the first time, bought a book for review. I was very impressed with this fellow warrior’s presentation, demeanor and attitude. Therefore, I was not surprised when I cracked the book and began reading the pages. It is truly one of the most interesting and factually correct – on point reads I have ever found. Well done SgtMaj Waugh.
Billy’s very exploits while serving in Vietnam, attached to SOG, are legendary. I’ve read John Plaster’s books and Billy’s listed in them.
50 years of fighting and hunting Americas’ enemies. What an incredible life. And here I was reading about it. Billy recounts his time spent in Khartoum ( K-town ) first observing and reporting on a Saudi of interest to the CIA; Osama Bin Laden – ( UBL ) Between Feb 91 – Jul 92, Billy and other’s were assigned the task of watching Bin Laden. While they carefully kept him under surveillance, and they had many opportunities, they were never given authority to cease Bin Laden’s existence. His status as the most sought terrorist in the world had not yet been reached.
Billy would spend more time in K-Town hunting for, Carlos the Jackal. Billy describes the many hours, and days, in detail, the hunt for, and eventual locating, tracking, surveillance of and finally capture of, (at the time), the World’s most WANTED MAN – Carlos the Jackal. Carlos was the MOST WANTED MAN on the International Hit-Parade. I can only imagine how elated Billy must have been to know he was responsible for events leading to the capture of Carlos the Jackal.
Billy has done what few men have done. Spent 50 years hunting America’s enemies, in 64 countries. What’s more, he’s shared some of those experiences with us.
Few men with the life experience Billy Waugh has, ever get to tell their story personally. Most often they take their life experience with them when they leave this life for the next, which is a great detriment to us all.
