Boston Police Officer Named to Anti-Violence Panel

BOSTON (AP) - Boston police Lt. Margot Hill has been appointed to the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Hill, who commands the Boston department’s domestic violence unit, already works with several Justice Department projects.

“Naturally this administration is taking steps to be more responsive to victims of domestic violence, and I’m honored to be a part of that,” Hill said.

Hill is credited with increasing the number of victim advocates assigned to the police department’s district stations, and has trained officers on evidence-based domestic assault investigations.

Boston Police Commissioner Paul F. Evans said Hill has revamped the department’s approach to domestic violence with a three-pronged approach using technology, investigations and accountability.

“I would not be surprised if many of her innovations are replicated nationally,” Evans said.
