Florida Passes Stiffer Sentences, GPS Tracking for Sex Offenders

Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush signed the Jessica Lunsford Act into law Monday which would force sex offenders to wear a global positioning system device after their release from prison.

The law would also mandate 25 years to life in prison for offenders’ whose victims were less than 12 years old.

The act was drafted after the body of 9-year-old Lunsford was found near her Florida home. A convicted sex offender who lived near Lunsford, John E. Couey, has been charged with her killing. He did not inform the state when he moved near the girl.
