An inattentive driver may be to blame for hitting a Kansas City police officer and two other people Monday on Interstate 435 and Eastwood Trafficway.
The officer was working an accident when the crash happened. Part of northbound I-435 was shutdown as a result.
Police believe the driver of the SUV was looking at the accident along the side of the road and veered too far to the left. She apparently lost control when she overcorrected.
“People have a natural curiosity to look when the red lights are on,” Sgt. Tony Sanders said.
Aylward said the officer was seriously hurt. Two others who were standing beside the cars went to hospitals with critical injuries. The driver of the SUV was also hurt. Aylward said it is not known yet whether she was ticketed.
“If there is any message that we would like to get out there, it’s be careful when you come up on an accident or go past one,” Sanders said.
