Lake City, Fla. (AP) -- A Lake City police officer shot and killed a man armed with a large knife early Monday after responding to an alarm at a convenience store, authorities said.
According to the Lake City Police Department, an officer responding to an alarm at the Stop N Go convenience store about 5:40 a.m., spotted a man armed with a large survival knife.
The man, John Medford Messer, 37, of Lake City, was ordered several times by the officer to get on the ground, the department said. When he headed toward the officer, he was shot once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Messer cut another man who tried to stop him before authorities arrived.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The name of the officer was not released.
