MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Police said a man in a sport-utility vehicle crashed into another vehicle, then fatally shot himself following a police chase.
Terris Fitten, 19, of Minneapolis, was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Deputy Police Chief Sharon Lubinski said no one else was injured as a result of the chase. The vehicle crashed just before 1 p.m. at a busy intersection in northeast Minneapolis.
Police were called to a north Minneapolis home by someone who reported that Fitten was despondent and had a gun. When officers arrived, they saw a man come out of the house and get into the SUV.
Police said the man ignored officers’ requests to stop and drove away, leading police on a chase at speeds up to 80 miles an hour into neighboring Columbia Heights before a sergeant called off the chase.
As the officers returned to Minneapolis, they saw the SUV collide with a small truck, then saw Fitten open the vehicle’s door and fall out wounded, Lubinski said. Fitten was treated at the scene for what Lubinski said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound until an ambulance arrived.
