By Darcy Jones, KRIS-TV (Corpus Christi, Texas)

An off duty police officer involved in a rollover accident Thursday morning has died.

Corpus Christi Police say Senior Officer Pete Segovia’s truck may have a lost a tire while he was driving westbound on I-37, causing the truck to roll two to three times.

Segovia was thrown from the pick-up and suffered massive head trauma.

“He was taken to Christus Spohn Memorial where he was treated in the emergency room, but they were not able to save him. He died in the emergency room,” Corpus Christi Police Chief Pete Alvarez said.

Chief Alvarez says he doesn’t know where Segovia was coming from or headed to when the accident occurred.

“The department at this time is in a state of shock. It’s a sad day for us and its difficult to deal with,” Commander J.V. Garcia said.

Cmdr. Garcia say Segovia was well liked and known for being a good street cop.

“Regardless of his location, Pete was in his element. He was a pretty well rounded officer,” Cmdr. Garcia said. “There were a lot of officers at the hospital last night. Pete had a lot of friends.”

“He was a good guy. Very happy always smiling and making you laugh,” Senior Officer William Oliver said. “We’re going to miss him a lot he was a great guy.”

Authorities are awaiting toxicology results to see if alcohol was a factor in the accident.

A rosary for Officer Segovia will be held at 7:30 PM Sunday at Seaside Funeral Home.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday morning at 10 AM.

That’ll be at Christ the King Catholic Church on Arlington.
