Newark, N.J. -- An Essex County, N.J. Sheriff’s Officer was shot while attempting to arrest a murder suspect in Newark this morning.
Officer Kennedy Murray, of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, was shot while executing the warrant inside the building just before 6:15 a.m. Officer Murray was shot in the stomach, just below his bullet-resistant vest. He is in surgery at University Hospital in Newark.
The suspect fled the scene and took a hostage in a nearby apartment building at 296 Wainwright Street. After an hour-long tense standoff, Niem Williams shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 21-year-old Williams was wanted for murder in Jersey City.
Officer Murray was executing a warrant in a joint operation with U.S. Marshals.
