NASSAU, Bahamas- Police were searching for one inmate who helped stage a breakout from a maximum security prison that left one guard and an inmate dead on Tuesday, authorities said.

Four inmates escaped from the maximum security block of the Fox Hill Prison early Tuesday morning, police said. A guard was killed trying to prevent the escape, while one of the fugitives was shot and killed and two were wounded and recaptured, said police spokesman Hulan Hanna.

Prison guard Cpl. Don Bowles was stabbed to death while trying to stop the escape. Officers Kenneth Sweeting and David Armbrister were wounded, but their injuries were not life threatening, said Dr. Elliston Rahming, a prison physician.

Guards shot and killed escaped convict Neil Brown. Inmates Forrester Bowe and Barry Parcoi were wounded but both were treated for their injuries and later returned to the prison, police said.

Corey Hepburn, serving time for armed robbery, was still at large on the New Providence island of this Caribbean nation.

Authorities were still investigating the escape.

Brown and Bowe had been sentenced to death after being convicted of murder. Parcoi was serving a life sentence for rape and armed robbery.
