Portland police have identified the man who was fatally shot by an officer Saturday at a downtown bus terminal after police say the man threatened to kill a woman he was holding with a knife.
The deceased was Jose Angel Padilla, 22, of Yakima, police spokesman Officer Henry Groepper said Sunday. An autopsy performed Sunday showed he died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
The woman police say Padilla was holding by the neck and threatening to kill when they arrived at the Greyhound Bus Terminal was identified as Anaisa “Ana” Valdez Arroyo, 21, also of Yakima. Arroyo, identified by police as Padilla’s girlfriend, received a small cut on her neck but had already returned home Sunday.
Groepper said the couple were passing through Portland on their way back to Yakima when the incident occurred. He said the couple had a history of domestic violence.
Officers arrived at the Greyhound terminal at 7:24 p.m. and found the suspect on top of the woman, police said in a news release. When the man showed the knife and began to lower it back toward the woman, the officer shot him with an AR-15 rifle.
Police said the officer who fired the shot is Brian D. Hubbard, 38, who has been a Portland police officer for nearly eight years. Hubbard was interviewed by investigators Sunday evening.
Groepper said the investigation is continuing.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Brian Grose at 503-823-0757 or Detective Paul Weatheroy at 503-823-0458. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is overseeing an investigation into the shooting. Officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome.
