A South Salt Lake police officer was injured Sunday afternoon when his patrol car crashed into a home.

The crash occurred about 12:10 p.m. near 3100 South and West Temple as officers were responding to arrest a man accused of pulling down his pants in front of two girls.

Officer Tyrone Boyd, a six-year veteran, lost control of his patrol car, hit a fence and slammed into a home, said Capt. Tracy Tingey. He suffered minor injuries to his legs.

The crash occurred when Boyd veered to avoid hitting a tan Subaru that failed to yield to him, though his patrol car’s lights and sirens were on, Tingey said. The driver of the Subaru drove away and has not been located.

The home sustained several thousands dollars in damage and it will cost about $23,000 to replace the patrol car, said Tingey. Murray police, who are investigating the crash, are still trying to determine how fast Boyd was going when he crashed.

Other officers located the 23-year-old man who allegedly dropped his trousers because the father of the 7- and 12-year-old girls followed him to the Trax line near 3300 South and 200 West.

Police tried to stop the man with a Taser gun when he resisted arrest but he was wearing a thick coat and the gun wasn’t effective, Tingey reported.

The man was arrested on suspicion of lewdness with a child, obstruction of justice and interfering with an arresting officer. He also was booked into jail on a warrant for two counts of lewdness. All charges are misdemeanors.
