GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Police arrested a man suspected of shooting at an officer in the chest Sunday morning along with two other men who were traveling with him.

The officer, 31-year-old Rafael Rico, was treated and released from a Phoenix hospital hours after the shooting. His bulletproof vest absorbed most of the impact, authorities said.

Glendale police have not identified the three men. Authorities say the incident began around 9:30 a.m. Sunday on West Maryland when an officer stopped a gray Oldsmobile that was reported stolen. The driver was taken into custody without incident, but one of the car’s two passengers jumped into the driver’s seat and sped away, police said.

The man swerved the car toward Rico and fired a shot that struck the officer in the upper chest, police said. One of the two men was taken into custody after the car got into a minor accident with another motorist. The other suspect fled from the vehicle but was arrested later, police said.
