Police Cadet Killed in Detroit Shootout

The Associated Press

Detroit -- A month before he was to become a city police officer, a 21-year-old police cadet was killed in a shootout.

Police are not releasing the name of the man who was shot in the head Saturday night. He and a 29-year-old friend, who also died of a shot to his head, were struck down when they walked into the middle of a family feud, police said.

A third person, a 21-year-old man, was shot in the thigh and was in temporary serious condition at Sinai-Grace Hospital, officials said.

The names of the victims have been withheld, pending notification of their families.

In custody are two men and a woman, a member of the bickering family. They are all believed to be associated with the incident, Detroit Police Homicide Lt. Roy McCalister told the Detroit Free Press for a Monday story.

Investigators said an argument, which involved the 29-year-old, was the result of a yearlong fight. When the argument began, everyone left the scene. The student police officer and his friends returned to the scene later that night and were attacked with an AK-47.

“One individual from the family feuding almost ran over another individual with a vehicle,’' McCalister said. “It’s neighbors feuding over little nothings. It carries over and carries over.’'

McCalister said the student officer’s death was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
