LOS ANGELES (AP) - Police shot and killed a man when he allegedly pointed a gun at them following a car chase, authorities said Sunday.
The shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday in the city’s Northeast Division, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Horace Frank said. Frank identified the man killed as Joshua Villanueva, 26, of Los Angeles.
The incident began when three uniformed officers in a police cruiser approached a parked white Honda with three people inside, Frank said.
Apparently seeing them approach, the driver jumped from the car and fled, while Villanueva, one of the passengers, allegedly got into the driver’s seat and sped away, Frank said..
He rammed into a post, exited the car, and pointed a chrome revolver at the officers, Frank said. Two of the officers opened fire, and Villanueva was hit and died in a nearby parking lot. Officers recovered the revolver.
The third passenger surrendered to police, but Frank did not know whether he was arrested. The original driver remained at large.
The shooting came a day after San Diego police shot and killed a man who allegedly fought with officers and threatened them with a police baton and beanbag shotgun he had commandeered from them.
