NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Police on Sunday were investigating an incident in which a Hampton man was shot and killed by officers after one officer was pinned between the man’s car and a parked vehicle.
Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston said three officers on bicycles who had approached a suspicious car in the 900 block of 27th Street issued a distress call late Saturday night.
All three officers fired at the man in the car, identified as Santonio Garrett, 22, after he accelerated and pinned one officer between his car and a parked car, Thurston said.
Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the torso. His body, which was found a short distance from the car, was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk for examination.
The officer who was pinned suffered a leg injury and underwent surgery Sunday, Thurston said. He was listed in fair condition at a hospital.
Two handguns were found in the vehicle and suspected drugs were found on Garrett, Thurston said.
The three officers, whose identities were not released, were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the case.
Thurston said the incident followed one Friday night in which a Newport News officer fired his weapon after a car that had been pulled over for a traffic stop accelerated when police noticed a weapon inside. No one was injured. A passenger was arrested, but the driver eluded police.
