LOVELAND, Colo. — The Loveland Police Department released a recorded critical incident briefing of the police shooting in which officers killed a Loveland man in his home on Banyan Avenue in July.
The video, which the department released Monday, includes footage of officers shooting 49-year-old Brant Peter Valvo after he fired shots toward officers.

The Loveland SWAT team was trying to serve search and arrest warrants for charges Valvo was facing of felony menacing, prohibited use of a weapon, and domestic violence, Lt. Brandon Johnson said in the briefing.
The video briefing includes body-worn camera footage, recordings of Valvo’s estranged wife’s 911 call, what negotiators experienced trying to contact Valvo, and drone footage of the events leading up to the shooting, during, and the aftermath.
Johnson said Valvo made threats to kill his wife and explained the various attempts by SWAT and crisis negotiators to get Valvo to exit his home; followed by the use of several less-than-lethal methods after he refused; and then, when Valvo exited his home through the back balcony with a gun, officers continued using pepper balls to move him away from the weapon.
The Loveland Police Department’s video shows that Valvo fired a shot toward officers first and then Sgt. Burke Baldwin and Officer Joshua Mielke fired shots in response.
The video aligns with the report the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office released earlier this month. It concluded that the officers who shot Valvo will not face any criminal charges because they defended other officers after Valvo fired a shot toward them.
Johnson said officers tried several methods to get the suspect to exit his home peacefully, and that it wasn’t until Valvo fired a shot that officers fired back.
Loveland Police Chief Tim Doran said the video was a department effort to be transparent and to show the steps the agency took before the shooting.
He also reminded the community that what happened was a tragedy and offered his condolences to those affected.
