Assailants Ambush Mexican Police Convoy in Border City Wounding Five

The Associated Press

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico - Unidentified gunmen ambushed a state police convoy in the border city of Nuevo Laredo on Sunday, wounding three officers and two civilians.

The assailants, who a witness said were dressed in black, fired hundreds of rounds from automatic weapons and police later found a bazooka nearby, though it was unclear whether that weapon had been used.

The shootout occurred at a major intersection near a busy shopping mall at around midday.

“We are investigating. We are on the lookout for several Suburban vans,” said state police commander Virgilio Rafael Hinojosa Salinas.

The assailants apparently fired from in or near the shopping center, and one of the wounded civilians was caught in the crossfire in his car.

Employees of the Specialized Clinic hospital said they were under orders from police not to provide information on the condition of the wounded men.

Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Texas, had been battered by violence in recent months, much of it related to the drug trade.
