DETROIT — Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. said he’s launching an investigation into whether proper procedure was followed after a suspect who claimed to have shot two people to death had to turn himself in twice before Detroit police arrested him.
According to police, the 36-year-old suspect went to a local Detroit fire station at 3:20 a.m. Saturday to tell authorities that he had been involved in a shooting hours earlier, about 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 16000 block of Inverness.
The suspect became angry while attending a party at the home and fired shots, allegedly killing two men and seriously injuring two others, police said.
He escaped in his vehicle before attempting to turn himself in at the fire station.
Fire officials called police, but all patrol units were busy on other calls, according to a news release by Detroit police.
That prompted the man, as yet unidentified, to leave the fire station for the 10th Precinct and turn himself in.
“Every effort to ensure that this person was taken into police custody should have occurred,” Godbee said Saturday.
“Therefore an administrative investigation will be conducted to determine if this police run was handled appropriately and to ascertain if there were any other patrol resources which should have been made available to respond to the Detroit Fire Engine Quarters.”
Detroit police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens had no additional information Sunday.
