PITTSBURG, Calif. — A 32-year-old Pittsburg man was arrested Tuesday night after putting a gun to a police officer’s head during a struggle, police said.
A patrol officer was driving near the 800 block of Carpino Avenue about 11 p.m. when he spotted a man standing idly in the rain, said Lt. Brian Addington. The officer parked and walked over to the man to ask what he was doing, and the man revealed he was a parolee for vehicle theft and evasion convictions.
When the officer asked the man whether he had anything illegal on him, the man ran, leading to a foot chase through a backyard, across the street, and into another backyard before the officer caught up with him.
The two got into a struggle and fell to the ground, Addington said. The officer then heard the “click” of a gun in his left ear, and saw that the man had put a small revolver to his head.
Addington said the officer grabbed the gun while the man bit his arm repeatedly to try to regain control of the weapon. No shots were fired.
More officers arrived and subdued the man, identified as Alfred Stone. They determined that the small revolver contained five live rounds and was reported stolen in a Pittsburg home burglary in June 2007.
Police also found Stone with cocaine and methamphetamine, and they suspect he was high during the confrontation.
The patrol officer, a two-year member of the Pittsburg Police Department, and Stone were treated for minor injuries and released. Stone was booked into Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, assaulting a police officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possessing stolen property, drug possession, and violating parole. He is being held without bail for the parole violation.
