Officer breaks up group of teens with dance off

The dance battle of the century?

By Rebecca Volent

What to do when you’ve got a bunch of teens who refuse to disperse? Challenge them to a dance off.

That’s what one Washington D.C. officer did after other officers had broken up a fight. There was still a group of lingering teens, including a 17-year-old named Aaliyah Taylor. She approached the officer and with the song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” playing on her phone, proceeded to do the Nae Nae dance. The officer laughed, telling her that she had better dance moves.

And so began the dance battle of the century.

Well, that may be an exaggeration, but it was pretty impressive. And what would the victor gain by winning? If the officer won, the teens would leave. If Taylor won, they could stay. After a few minutes of dancing, the officer declared them both winners and gave everyone a hug. The teens dispersed with a smile, with Taylor having a new view on police officers.

“I thought all cops were cruel because that’s how I saw them. I’ve now seen there are good cops out there.” Aaliyah Taylor (Washington Post)
