ELKHART, Ind. — The death of an Elkhart police officer who was found in his squad car late Tuesday night appears to be medically related, police said.
Cpl. Michael L. Swygart, a 20-year veteran of the department, was assigned to be with a subject while the subject was being treated by medical staff at Elkhart General Hospital.
It is believed Swygart, 43, returned to his squad car at some point to complete reports on his in-car computer. When another officer went to relieve him about 11:30 p.m., the officer found Swygart had died, police said. An investigation into the cause of Swygart’s death is still pending. Police will release more details as they become available.
“Nothing appears to be out of the ordinary,” said Lt. Ed Windbigler, Elkhart police spokesman. “But we just don’t have any results yet.”
