NEW YORK — A woman being held hostage used Grubhub to alert police and save herself, ABC News reported.

The woman turned to the food delivery service for help after she was assaulted by a man she met online and held captive in her apartment, the report said. The suspect wouldn’t let her use the phone – except to order food.

That’s how the Chipper Truck Café in Yonkers came to receive an order for delivery with a distressing message. In the section for additional instructions, the woman wrote, “Please call the police,” along with, “Don’t make it obvious.”

“She was basically saying to bring the police with the delivery,” restaurant owner Alice Bermejo told ABC News.

Bermejo says an employee saw the note and asked Bermejo’s husband what to do.

“He was like, ‘Call the police. Can’t take any risks. Better safe than sorry,’” Bermejo said.

Police responded to the address and arrested Kemoy Royal. Royal was charged with rape, unlawful imprisonment, strangulation, criminal possession of a weapon and sexual abuse, among other charges, police said.

Bermejo says the victim’s friend later called and thanked the restaurant for helping, according to the report. Grubhub also took notice.

Eric Ferguson, Grubhub’s CEO, reached out to Bermejo and offered her $5,000 to invest in her business to recognize the efforts of its owners and quick-thinking employee, ABC News reported.
