LONDON — Police said on Monday that keys to soccer venue Wembley Stadium had been missing for a week, but organizers of the London Olympics emphasized that the relevant locks had been changed and there were no security issues as a result.
The lost keys, worth 40,000 pounds, went missing July 24 and despite repeated searches were not found, Scotland Yard said in a statement on Monday.
Security has been a large concern of Olympic organizers and earlier this month private security company GS4 said it would be unable to provide the 10,400 guards it was contracted by the organizing committee to supply.
On Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron ordered the deployment of 1,200 troops — in addition to the 17,000 already on call — to protect venues and guarantee security at the Games.
