LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. — Officials are investigating after the gravestone of a fallen officer was vandalized Saturday.

The Indy Channel reports the wife of fallen Detective Sgt. Thomas Cochran reported the crime after finding the word “PIG” scrawled in yellow spray paint on his headstone.

“To do it to a man who gave everything to a community and literally gave his life for his community. It’s unbelievable,” Jo’nee Cochran, the officer’s widow, told WCPO. “My heart hurts all over again.”

Cochran was killed in the line of duty in January 2005 after his cruiser hit a patch of ice and crashed as the officer rushed to the scene of a suicidal man armed with a knife, according to the Indy Star. He was the first officer to die in the line of duty in Lawrenceburg in 40 years.

The officer is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons.

“Sure, we all have enemies because of our job,” Mike Lanning, assistant chief of the Lawrenceburg Police Department, told the Indy Star. “I just can’t, you know, after all these years think of why somebody picked him.”

Police are currently investigating the incident.
