FRANKFORT, Ky. — A handgun and a badge stolen this week from a Frankfort police captain’s car have been recovered, officials said Friday.
The gun was found Thursday afternoon “at an undisclosed rural location” after the sheriff’s office received tips about its whereabouts, Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton said.
The gun and badge were found in separate places, Melton said.
“We are very thankful to have this property back in our care and custody, and to have it off the street,” Frankfort Police spokesman Maj. Rob Warfel said.
Asked whether any arrests had been made, Melton said the case will be presented to a grand jury Tuesday for possible indictments.
Several suspects are expected to be indicted, Melton said.
Melton and Warfel wouldn’t give details, but they said that, to their knowledge, the gun and badge were not used in any crimes.
“I don’t think either agency made any runs on anybody trying to impersonate a police officer,” Melton said.
The suspects “were trying to move the gun and sell it quickly,” he said.
Asked what price the gun could have brought on the street, Franklin County Commonwealth’s Attorney Larry Cleveland said, “Depends on the street.”
The Glock 27 handgun, which has a retail price of $425 to $600, and the badge were stolen from a locked, unmarked police car, which was parked overnight at the captain’s home. He discovered the theft Wednesday morning.
Officials said the officer’s car was among other vehicles that had been broken into in the same neighborhood.
