SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — Two suspects have been charged in a hit-and-run incident that left an officer in critical condition after a traffic stop Monday.

Newsday reports 34-year-old driver Chad Morizsan and 22-year-old passenger Nicholas Franzone were arraigned on multiple charges Tuesday.

Morizsan and Franzone were stopped by plainclothes Officers Nicholas Guerrero and Heriberto Lugo Monday on an arrest warrant when the hit-and-run occurred.

Morizsan fled the traffic stop and struck both officers, leaving Guerrero with a “very serious head injury” that required treatment in the Neurosurgical Intesive Care Unit at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York. Guerrero remained there in critical condition Tuesday.

Lugo was treated for minor injuries and released.

Both Morizsan and Franzone were later taken into custody after they struck a vehicle and carjacked another.

Morizsan is charged with third-degree grand larceny in the theft of the vehicle he was driving at the time of the incident, along with assault on a police officer, leaving the scene of an incident that resulted in serious physical injury, petty larceny in the theft of gasoline, leaving the scene of an incident involving property damage, and second-degree robbery and unauthorized use of a vehicle in a carjacking after fleeing the accident scene. He was also arrested on three additional open warrants.

Franzone has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, according to the report.
