SANTA FE — Two New Mexico police officers are under investigation for opening fire on a minivan filled with a mother and her five children after the mother took off, leading them on a high speed pursuit.
Orianna Ferrel, 39, was pulled over for speeding last month and drove off after the officer told her to turn her vehicle off.
Dash cam video shows Ferrel pull over a second time, arguing with the officer and refusing to cooperate. Her son, 14, can be seen exiting the vehicle, but he retreated when the officer took out his TASER.
The teen got out of the van again and engaged in a scuffle with the officer. The family locked themselves in their car as backup arrived at the scene.
A second officer fired at least three shots at the van as it drove off, according to CBS News.
After a 10-minute high-speed pursuit, Ferrell finally pulled over.
She was charged with five counts including child endangerment, resisting arrest and reckless driving. Her son was charged with battery, according to the report.
In a statement, New Mexico’s State Police chief said: “If the investigation determines that the officer improperly discharged his firearm in this case, we will take swift action because improperly using a firearm isn’t tolerated by the State Police.”
