CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A photo captured an emotional moment between a California LEO and his dying K-9.

Chula Vista police Lt. Eric Thunberg said 7-year-old K-9 Griffen died on Saturday from an undisclosed medical condition, the Associated Press reports. Griffen’s handler, identified as Officer Chancellor, his handler’s family and other members of the K-9 program were there for Griffin’s final moments.

“It was a hard day for all of us, especially Griffen’s handler and best friend, Officer Chancellor. May you #RIP, Griffen. Thank you for your service to our Department and the city of #ChulaVista. -1180,” the CVPD posted on Twitter.

Griffen worked with his handler during the night shift and was well-known in the South Bay community, according to KSWB.

“It is hard to overstate the bond that a K-9 and his handler have when working long hours in dangerous situations. CVPD’s law enforcement family extends deepest sympathies to his partner officer,” CVPD said.
