CHICAGO - An off-duty Chicago Police officer on his way to the dry cleaners ended up in a gunfight Saturday afternoon on the South Side.
The officer was getting out of his car in the 100 block of East 47th Street when he saw three men beating a man in a nearby alley, police said.
When the officer intervened, one or more of the men pulled guns and began shooting. The officer, who was not injured, returned fire, police said.
One of the other men was wounded and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. It was unclear if he was shot by the officer or one of his accomplices, who fled in a dark-colored car, police said.
The shooting is being probed by the Independent Police Review Authority.
