COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Columbia Police Department officer was killed in a vehicle collision Saturday night, WIS 10 reported.
Stacy L. Case, 37, was responding to a call when her patrol vehicle and a University of South Carolina Police Department vehicle collided in an intersection, Chief Skip Holbrook told the publication.
Case was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The other officer involved, Sgt. Allan Bolin, was reported to be in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
“There is nothing that can ever prepare you for a line of duty death, it shakes you to the core,” Holbrook told WIS 10. “Case embodied what we expect from police officers – integrity, compassion, courage and a genuine commitment to service. All of the CPD family is heartbroken.”
Before her four years with the department, Case was in the Army from 1996 to 2011. Case received several awards for her service including: the Iraq Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Award, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and a Good Conduct Award.
Several tweets from officials said they were grieving the loss of Case.
“Everyone’s heartbroken,” Mayor Steven Benjamin told the news site. “It’s another sad, somber reminder that when danger happens, when shots are fired, when peril is at our front door, these men and women run toward that danger while the rest of us are running in the opposite direction. They are nothing less than heroes and Stacy Case is a very clear example of what that means.”
