SAMBURG, Tenn. — A Tennessee Police Chief has died after suffering a heart attack in the line of duty, the Officer Down Memorial Page reported.

Samburg Chief Christopher Bayard Cummings was working with other officers to remove a beaver dam that was causing flooding on roadways. He told officers that he wasn’t feeling well and drove back to the station, according to the page.

When the other officers returned to the station, they found Cummings unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite resuscitation efforts.

Cummings, who was 53, was a U.S. Army and Tennessee National Guard veteran. He had served in law enforcement for 29 years. He is survived by his son, mother, father, girlfriend and stepson, according to the page.
