JAMES CITY, Va. — A Newport News Police Officer charged in the sexual abuse of a teenage girl was arraigned Friday in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court.

James Sherman, 40, faces charges of taking indecent liberties with a child and aggravated sexual battery. Investigators believe the abuse occurred between June 2005 and July 2006.

Sherman’s case is set for a jury trial Feb. 6 and 7, 2008. He is currently free on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond.

Sherman was a patrol officer for nine years in the city’s north precinct. Since his arrest in June, he has been performing administrative tasks for the police department pending the outcome of an ongoing internal investigation.
