AURORA, Colo. — Police say a Denver-area officer was wounded during a traffic stop, triggering a hourslong search for the shooter.
The violence occurred Friday night in Aurora, just east of Denver.
Police spokesman Frank Fania says that two officers stopped a vehicle about 9 p.m. and its driver fired several shots, hitting one of them.
He says that the second officer returned fire but it isn’t known whether anyone was hit.
The wounded officer underwenddt surgery early Saturday, but Fania didn’t have details on the officer’s condition.
The suspect fled a few blocks away after abandoning a car — which had just been stolen.
Scores of officers searched a wide area, aided by aircraft and police dogs.
Fania says the manhunt ended at 1:45 a.m. but many police were still seeking witnesses and securing the scene for investigators.
