LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Police released video of a fatal shooting of a man who officials say charged at officers in an abandoned home.

As police entered the home, they can be heard announcing their presence and asking anyone in the home to show their face.

The officers made their way to the second floor where “a white male, appears to be in his 20s came at one of the officers, [and] struck that officer in the chest region,” according to Conrad.

According to the Courier-Journal, officers opened fire on William Young, 32, fatally wounding him.

The officer who was struck in the chest shot himself in the hand as he fell back. The officer was treated and released from the hospital Monday. .

Conrad said Young was armed with a 12-inch, thin and pointed metal pole and assumed an “ambush-like position” before “charging” at officers.

Young’s family said he had been homeless for several years had substance abuse and mental health issues. Young’s brother said his brother had been robbed before and was most likely trying to protect himself.
